The Integrating Resilience in Local Governance in West Bank and Gaza project is funded by the Municipal Development and Lending Fund (MDLF) and has been implemented by the Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Center (UPDRRC), An Najah National University. This web-based mapping platform has been developed in collaboration with the GEM Foundation.

You can access hazard, exposure, (social) vulnerability and risk maps for the West Bank and Gaza by clicking the following links:

The objectives of the project are to lay the foundation for integrating resilience in local governance through the production of technical knowledge, information, and guidelines, and the development of the corresponding institutional capacity. One of the key tasks in this regard has been to conduct Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment and Mapping and this platform provides access to the maps that have been developed as part of this hazard and risk assessment.

The following hazards have been considered in the assessment:

  • Geophysical hazards (earthquakes, liquefaction, landslides and tsunamis)

  • Climate change hazards (especially related to extreme temperatures and rainfall)

  • Hydrological hazards (flooding and flash flooding)

Exposure to these hazards has been assessed by modelling the spatial distribution of the following assets in the West Bank and Gaza:

  • Residential, commercial and industrial buildings and their occupants;

  • Schools, hospitals, municipality and civil defence buildings and their occupants:

  • Other critical infrastructure from the following sectors: Safety and security; Food, water, shelter; Financial; Health and medical; Energy; Communication; Transport; Hazardous material;

  • Agricultural land.

Seismic risk, flood risk and climate change risk for these assets has been computed by combining the hazard and exposure with social and physical vulnerability models and indices.
